43.5k Pot with 7-2?!
HOTW
Dear friends, fans, and people who never check back the river with 7 high...
Every week we talk about one hand that made us say wow. This week we had a lot to choose from, but one hand was special.
Hand of the Week!
This week’s hand involved a tournament legend up against a young regular player in our game. It’s special because:
We see guts prevail over logic
It’s a pot over $40k!
Hand selection (7-2 offsuit! I’m sensing a trend here…)
Now that I have your attention, meet my friend Achille (pronounced Ah-Sheel. I know right? He’s French). A solid poker player and a good friend of the Table 1 family. If there’s one thing to note about Achille, it’s that he gets very angry sometimes. Especially when he gets shown a bluff. But in a cute and lovable way. Like R2-D2 spinning and beeping while running into a wall. No one knows what he’s saying, but we all chuckle when it happens.
For those unfamiliar, on Table 1 we always play the 7-2 game. Which just means if you win the pot with a seven and a deuce in the hole, every one at the table has to pay you some money. In our game it's $200 per person, and if you're the last guy to fold, it's $400. That's right, if you cost the whole table money, you gotta pay an extra $200. Because fuck you for being a nit that's why.
Anyways on to the hand:
We’re playing $25/$50 with $100 big blind ante. A player in early position opens the action to $300. Another player calls and another frequent player in the game, one Chino Rheem, makes it $1,500 on the button. Achille, the crafty little frenchman, wakes up in the straddle with K♥️K♦️. He makes it $4,000 to go.
Not one to give up on a pot, Chino calls the $2,500 more to see a flop of Q♥️8♠️6♠️. Achille continues with a bet of $2,400. Chino beats him into the pot.
The turn is the 3♠️. A scary card for two red kings. Achille checks it over to Chino who fires out a bet of $10,000 into this $13.5k pot. A very healthy wager. Achille considers it for a moment before flicking in the call.
Another 6 hits the river pairing the bottom card on the flop. Still just 3 spades on the board. Achille checks it over to Chino once more. Chino doesn’t take long before announcing all in! Achille ponders the $12k bet. It’s not that much when you consider that the pot has grown to $33.5k. Would he really bluff here for that little?
Achille decides not. He tosses his K♥️K♦️ into the muck. Chino smiles. “Pay me!” As he turns over the red 7♥️2♥️.
A roar erupts from the table. Everyone happy to pay except for Achille who can’t believe his eyes. “I’m SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW” he shrieks as he tosses 4 black chips Chino’s way.
Sometimes you lose a big pot at showdown, and sometimes a fold costs you $40k. That’s life on Table 1.
See you next week for another Hand of the Week!
Cheers,
